COVID-19

COVID-19 Update: March 20,2020

COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Community Housing office remains open during normal business hours. We are controlling the access into the office.  You will need to ring the doorbell beside the door to gain access. You will be required to answer some screening questions if you come into our office space. These measures are in place to protect both you, our tenants, and our staff so that we can keep our office open to serve you.

If you are dropping off paperwork please place in the mail slot beside the door, or better yet, scan and email to community.housing@queensu.ca.

Maintenance requests are being received and attended to based on the urgency of the request. Non-urgent requests will be deferred as we work through the impacts of COVID-19. Any after-hours maintenance emergencies are still being attended to. In the event you have an after hours maintenance emergency such as no heat, security issue, lock out, please call the Emergency Report Centre at 613-533-3155.
Community Housing is following a strict cleaning protocol including cleaning and disinfecting with special attention paid to high frequency touch points in the common areas of our buildings. Cleaning is defined as removing germs, dirt and impurities from surfaces. Disinfecting is defined as killing the germs on the surface using specialized chemicals. Individual units remain the responsibility of the tenants.
Rent
Over the past number of days, the university has made several announcements with respect to classes moving to alternative delivery, and continues to make decisions regarding its COVID-19 response, based on guidance from Public Health.
As you may know, students living in residence have been required to leave by March 22nd, unless they are unable to do so due to travel bans or other restrictions.  This decision was reached in the interest of public health, due to the high density living environment in residences, the need to protect the safety of those students who are unable to leave at this time and so that buildings can be readied for other uses, should Public Health dictate.  Students who are tenants of community housing, living in low density homes, have not been required to vacate in the interest of public health and the university is unable to offer rent abatement.
We sympathize with those who may face financial hardship in the current circumstances.  The university has measures in place to assist students in financial need, including the emergency bursary.   Students may also be able to access financial assistance through COVID-19 assistance programs announced by the Federal government, that may provide short-term funding for students with immediate needs.
The situation facing our country and our community as a result of COVID-19 is unprecedented and the actions required of us all are having significant impacts across our community.  We encourage you to investigate the above sources of financial support and various other resources the university has available to support students Student Affairs COVID-19 supports to complete the academic session and help mitigate the impacts of this pandemic.
